Host - Film Review
Starring – Haley Bishop, Jemma Moore, Emma Louise Webb and Radina Drandova
Director – Rob Savage
Host is a Shudder original and was produced during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is Director Rob Savage’s first feature length film and I’ll be honest; I was quite impressed with it. The film itself runs for only 57 minutes, but there was something fresh and creative about it that the short run time didn’t bother me.
A group of friends in lockdown decide to host a séance night on Zoom call. While joking around, one of the participants accidently invites an unknown presence to the group, resulting in strange paranormal activity and deadly consequences.
Host is a fun film to watch. This style of horror film has been done before with movies such as Unfriended in 2014, but Rob Savage gives the film a unique kick to it. While the actresses maybe unfamiliar names, the acting is great. The Zoom call style of filming gives the audience the experience of feeling part of the whole thing; we are left feeling as participants alongside the cast, sat in the comfort of our own homes as the horror unfolds.
Although there are predicable moments and the plot is a little transparent, Host is still fun and enjoyable to watch.
I will give Host 7/10
